Paul Rothwell

My name is Paul. I’m originally from Warwick in the Midlands and I’ve been singing for most of my life. I sang for around 10 years in my local church choir both before my voice broke and after ‘migrating’ to the back rows as a tenor. Throughout school, music and drama were as important to me as my sport was. You would often find me with a sword in my hand or in a kayak on the river Avon as often as I would be rehearsing with the Jazz band, choir or orchestra. Showing that it is possible to combine a passion for both music and sport.

I came to Cardiff in 2007 to study music at Cardiff University.  The biggest moment for me was when I auditioned for the Welsh National Youth Opera when Tim was the musical director. Little did I know that the audition was also my audition for Only Men Aloud. I had a phone call a few weeks later asking me if I was free for a trip to London to sing on a new BBC program called ‘Last Choir Standing’, of course I said yes and the rest, as they say, is history.

Since being in OMA I’ve had so many experiences that I will never forget! I still remember the moment that we were announced as the winners of ‘Last Choir Standing’ like it was yesterday. We’ve been on countless trips throughout the UK, Europe and America, we’ve sung to thousands of people in concert halls, churches and even fields and I think the best bit is that we still all get on with each other!

Being in OMA has been so much fun and I’m loving the fact that I can now share these experiences and opportunities with Only Boys Aloud.
