FIRST ANNIVERSARY ONLY BOYS ALOUD CONCERT IN VALLEYS HEARTLAND

Valleys singing sensations Only Boys Aloud (OBA) will headline a concert for the first time this summer when they perform at the Parc & Dare in Treorchy on Friday July 22. They will be joined by guest star, local girl Sophie Evans, taking a night off from the Wizard of Oz on the stage of the London Palladium.

The boys will be singing a full programme of material they have been working on in the year since they first emerged to wow audiences wherever they perform. Their debut was at the National Eisteddfod on home turf in Ebbw Vale, before appearing at the Millennium Stadium with Dame Shirley Bassey and Catherine Zeta Jones in the Ryder Cup Welcome to Wales concert, and becoming TV stars with a BBC Cymru Wales TV series, with a second series, currently, being filmed. Supported by Valleys Heart & Soul, Arts and Business Cymru and the Arts Council of Wales, this comes weeks after announcing a major three-year partnership deal with Principality Building Society to secure the choir’s future, the boys are lining up their own concert.

Only Boys Aloud are mentored by members of the Classical Brit award winning Only Men Aloud (OMA) are the brainchild of Music Director Tim Rhys Evans. Tim said: “The boys have been working gradually building up their repertoire since they started and what better place to headline their first concert than home, the heartland of the Valleys where these boys live; as Dorothy herself says “there’s no place like” it - appropriate then isn’t it that the boys’ guest artist on the night will be the girl who’d been singing that role for the last year, Sophie Evans. It’s been an amazing year, it’s going to be a really special concert, and promises to be another emotional milestone in the boys’ development.”

Only Boys Aloud launched in April 2010 as part of The Valleys Heart and Soul campaign, a three year campaign which aims to raise awareness of the region as a tourist destination and bring long-term economic benefit to the area.

At the launch of their partnership last month, news of the Principality Only Boys Aloud Academi was announced who will also be part of the bill. This is a residential summer school at Atlantic College that will intensively train and develop stand-out, young, Welsh musical talent from the choir.

The concert is being promoted by Orchard Entertainment, Wales’ largest independent music promoter who are also staging The Wanted at Ponty’s Big Weekend that weekend, and JLS in the Liberty Stadium in June. Tickets are £10 and £8 and available from www.rct-arts.co.uk or by phoning 08000 147111
